The Framingham Heart Study newsletter is produced once each year in the late winter or early spring. It is sent to the over 7,000 participants in the Heart Study all over the world and includes articles pertaining to current research, upcoming examination cycles, newsworthy past and upcoming events, and contact information of importance to our participants.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) Study
The Framingham Heart Study invites all Gen 3 and Omni 2 participants to participate in a research study on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), a complex and not yet fully understood condition characterized by heightened sensitivity to low levels of everyday chemicals, such as fragrances, cleaning agents, and pesticides.
We are conducting one of the first large scale studies of MCS to better understand how common this condition is in the community and identify factors that may be associated with it.
The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of MCS and related environmental sensitivities. The knowledge gained may help support earlier identification of MCS and contribute to a better understanding of approaches to managing symptoms.

LEGACY
The LEGACY program, the first of its kind, is a tissue biobank that will enable us to study tissues most often affected in chronic conditions, and specifically the heart. Individuals who are interested in providing one last research contribution to the FHS and broader community may sign-up for heart donation after they pass away. The ability to pair the heart tissue data with all of the data collected at prior research visits across the lifespan will lead to new discoveries to improve the lives of people living with heart conditions. Heart donation from FHS participants like you will facilitate decades of research to come that will deepen our understanding of heart health and disease and energize new scientific breakthroughs.

Brain Tissue Donation Program
Brains of mentally healthy individuals are very useful to compare with those of individuals known to have neurological disorders. In this way, we continue to learn why some people remain mentally competent and physically healthy throughout their lives, while others develop strokes or become demented. Many of our participants, by nature altruistic, have expressed a desire to be organ donors. Just as a donation of a kidney or heart gives an individual recipient a second chance at a healthy life, a brain donation to research increases the chance of a healthy old age for the next generation.
We at the Framingham Heart Study are particularly interested in exploring the environmental and genetic links to neurological diseases as well as healthy aging. Our original members, many of their children, grandchildren, and other family members have been coming to FHS for decades, resulting in a wealth of data on physical and neurological conditions, life styles and other health-related changes that have occurred over time. Many participants also have had brain imaging and detailed neurological testing. By relating our clinical information to neuropathological findings, we have a unique opportunity to identify risk factors for disease. That is why the Framingham Brain Tissue Donation Program is open only to participants in the Framingham Heart Study.
