Publication Policy

All publications based on data from the Framingham Heart Study must have the following acknowledgement or a facsimile thereof:

This project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. 75N92019D00031.

The FHS Publications Committee has set forth the following procedures by which manuscripts produced by FHS core and ancillary investigators are reviewed. Compliance is necessary in order for your publication to be included in the FHS Annual Report to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and in the Framingham Heart Study Bibliography, which is updated at least yearly and posted here on the Framingham Heart Study website. It is also important to notify the Framingham Heart Study of the complete reference when your article is published. The senior or corresponding author on each manuscript will be responsible for the implementation of these guidelines.

The procedure for review is as follows:

All manuscripts and abstracts based on Framingham Heart Study data must be sent via email to Ann Walsh, at walshac@nhlbi.nih.gov prior to submission for publication
- Those manuscripts with NHLBI authors or co-authors will be sent for review by NHLBI EBPDOCS at least 30 days prior to submission for publication. Abstracts must be sent at least seven days prior to submission. The title page should include the address, phone number, fax number, and email address of the corresponding author, as well as acknowledgement of all support, especially the NHLBI contract number 75N92019D00031. The NHLBI will review the manuscript and notify the corresponding author of the approval and any comments or suggested revisions. Every effort will be made to review the manuscript within two to three weeks of submission and abstracts within one week.
- Those manuscripts without NHLBI authors or co-authors will be sent to the Framingham Heart Study Project Officer for informational purposes only.
- Noteworthy manuscripts based on Framingham data of any author will be sent to the Project Officer for forwarding to the NHLBI Division Director and the NHLBI Press office.
As mandated by the National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy entitled “Enhancing Public Access to Archived Publications Resulting from NIH Funded Research”, all investigators must submit journal articles arising from NIH-funded research to the digital archive PubMed Central (PMC), which is managed by the National Library of Medicine. It is important that investigator-authors make certain that any copyright transfer or other publication agreements with journals or similar publishers allow articles to be submitted to NIH in accordance with the Public Access policy. Please see suggested author’s cover letter for general submissions to journals. The corresponding author of the publication will be responsible for submitting the journal article to PubMed Central or requesting that the Journal do so. It will be the responsibility of all investigators to inform co-authors of this mandate and to ensure compliance. There can be no exceptions to this requirement. The Framingham Heart Study conducts research under a contract with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and is, therefore, responsible for monitoring compliance with the Public Access Policy with regard to publications based on Framingham data. Failure to comply with this policy may result in denial of future requests for Framingham data.
The Framingham Heart Study should be notified by email to Ann Walsh at walshac@nhlbi.nih.gov of the name of the journal by which the manuscript is accepted and the anticipated date of publication.
